Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 10.06.38 AMFrom the transcript: “Author of The Annihilation of Nature: Human Extinction of Birds and Mammals, Mexican conservationist Gerardo Ceballos joins me to discuss his landmark study of accelerated human-induced species loss. His stunning finding: we’re entering the sixth great extinction of humanity. Wow. A scholar at Stanford University and the University of Mexico’s Institute of Ecology, Ceballos is credited with spearheading the first endangered species act of Mexico. “Humanity has unleashed a massive and escalating assault on all living things,” Ceballos writes, “potentially the worst ecological crisis since the asteroid hit that killed the dinosaurs.”

Ceballos co-authored The Annihilation of Nature with Paul Ehrlich and Anne Ehrlich last fall. A highly-readable, emotive, and hugely important book, three of today’s most distinguished conservationists bring us face-to-face with the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, telling the stories of the birds and mammals we have lost and those that are now on the road to extinction. These tragic tales, coupled with eighty-three colour photographs from the world’s leading nature photographers, display the beauty and biodiversity that humans are squandering.

About the show, “The Open Mind was created and hosted by Richard D. Heffner, American historian, broadcaster, and university professor. Beginning June 2014, The Open Mind continued with a new host, Mr. Heffner’s grandson, Alexander Heffner. The Open Mind as a weekly public affairs program was designed to elicit guests’ insights into the challenges Americans face in a variety of contemporary areas of national concern.

“As host of The Open Mind, Heffner continues its mission to engage viewers, especially a generation of young Americans, through a thoughtful excursion into the world of ideas. In a recent New York Times story, he described his goal to “interrogate ideas” rather than guests furthering a “vision of communications and media serving the public interest. Always true to its roots of nonadversarial conversation, The Open Mind explores ideas of the most compelling writers, technologists, artists, practitioners of law, policy and all realms of public life.”
